Groundwork East has over 30 years of experience in delivering bespoke projects that use the environment as a catalyst for building a more sustainable future. As their activities develop and their area of activity expands they are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and creative person to assist the Operations Manager with a programme of sustainable projects and initiatives across Suffolk and Norfolk.

Objective

As Senior Project Officer you will initiate, develop, manage and deliver environmental projects, including larger programmes throughout Suffolk and Norfolk alongside identified partner organisations and local groups.

You will work across all Trust teams including employment programmes, environmental education initiatives, awareness-raising activities both within and outside of educational settings, and with the landscape design team to develop project designs and youth projects/activities.

Responsibilities

Outputs and Key Tasks

Outputs

  1. Initiate, develop, manage and deliver environmental projects, including larger programmes, throughout Suffolk and Norfolk alongside identified partner organisations and local groups in line with Trust business plan objectives.

  2. Work across all Trust teams including employment training programmes (with Employment Manager), environmental education initiatives and awareness-raising activities both within and outside of educational settings, landscape design team to develop project designs and youth projects/activities.

  3. Raise the profile of projects internally and externally with partners, funders and communities through effective publicity, working closely with the Marketing Team.

  4. Submit financial claims and provide verbal and written reports to funders; and ensure Groundwork's national performance targets are met.

  5. Work in a manner so as to develop the skills, confidence and capabilities of community partners.

Key Tasks

  1. Effectively manage a varied workload, ensuring all projects are well planned, remain within budget, outputs are achieved and milestones met, through efficient project management.

  2. Work alongside the Operations Manager and Development Director to identify and apply for external funding, including for larger programmes, across Suffolk and Norfolk.

  3. Deputise for the Operations Manager as agreed and when required.

  4. Manage volunteers / sessionals taking part in Groundwork projects, including groups of vulnerable adults, community groups and corporate volunteers. This will include both office-based and practical activities such as community consultation, food growing and horticulture tasks.

  5. Identify and liaise with appropriate stakeholders including local authorities, health authorities, schools, youth agencies, businesses and local communities to ensure a coordinated and multi-agency approach.

  6. Maintain contact as appropriate, beyond project timescales.

  7. To play an active role as appropriate more widely across Groundwork East to develop Groundwork’s project programme; and influence the Trust’s work overall.

  8. Promote Groundwork activities at a local and regional level; providing an efficient and courteous service.

  9. Ensure compliance with Trust policies, and with insurance and statutory requirements, particularly health and safety, the Children’s Act and equal opportunities.

  10. Liaise with other Groundwork Trusts, and Groundwork UK as necessary.

  11. Undertake any task that may be requested from time to time by the Executive Director or Operations Director, Line Manager or Operations Managers as may be consistent with the nature and scope of this post.

Personal Specification

Essential

  1. Demonstrable experience of delivering community/environmental projects.

  2. Previous experience of community consultation / engagement / participation / outreach delivery.

  3. Excellent organisational, planning, facilitation, time management and project management skills; ability to work to frequently tight, externally fixed deadlines.

  4. Experience of working with a wide range of key partners and building effective relationships.

  5. Experience of supervising or managing staff / volunteers / sessionals.

  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to use a variety of styles to reach diverse audiences.

  7. Good knowledge of IT including Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as email and internet use.

  8. The ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

  9. Experience of marketing, bid writing and fundraising.

  10. A valid driving licence and access to a car insured for business purposes.

  11. Willingness to undertake a DBS check.

Desirable

  1. A degree or similar qualification in an environmental or community development based subject.

  2. Up to date Emergency First Aid Training.

  3. Knowledge of the process of Health and Safety Assessment for practical tasks.

  4. An understanding and commitment to the principles of Equal Opportunities.

  5. Experience of working with children, youth, minority ethnic communities, vulnerable adults including those with physical and mental health problems.

  6. An understanding and interest in current community and environmental issues.

  7. A knowledge of the procedures of Local Authorities.

  8. Familiarity with community funding opportunities.

  9. Holds a minibus license.

Salary (per annum pro rata): £23,780 to £27,289

Work outside normal hours: Some work outside normal office hours during evenings and at weekends
