Job Description

Background

Society for the Environment (SocEnv) is incorporated by Royal Charter (2004) to license UK professional bodies to award their members with the qualification "Chartered Environmentalist" (CEnv) and Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech). There are currently 24 license professional partners through which 7,000 individuals have registered as Chartered Environmentalists (within the UK and across 60+ countries worldwide).

The 24 Licensed Bodies have about 500,000 individual members from whom they may draw future potential Chartered Environmentalists and Environmental Technicians who qualify to join the professional registers. The market for the Society's qualifications could draw from a potential international market and there are ambitious growth plans to deliver 10,000 individuals on the CEnv register by 2019. There is plenty of scope for long-term growth for this young organisation. They work with their licensed bodies to deliver events and publications that showcase the work of its member bodies.

The company is also developing its policy voice - it aspires to provide key environmental insight on environmental challenges faced by the wide array of sectors it represents. This is achieved by facilitating policy collaboration between its licensed partners and external organisations.

Objective

Facilitate input into policy and external influencing activities in collaboration with SocEnv’s key partners If you have a flexible approach to work and enjoy working as part of a team, this role gives you the opportunity to contribute to influence Environmental and Sustainability policy.

You will be responsible for leading high-profile insight projects across the Society’s 24 licensed professional bodies and working in partnership with leading environmental organisations to directly influence government and policy makers. Through focusing on analysis of insight from over 7,000 registered environmental professionals across a broad range of disciplines you will contribute to building the organisation’s insight expertise and will be delivering impactful evidence to influence policy makers across government and other influential organisations.

You will be expected to play a leading role in shaping SocEnv’s future work programme and championing policy and insight work across the organisation and its partners.

Responsibilities

Principal Activities

  1. Work with external and internal colleagues to plan, lead, organise and deliver successful projects that influence positive environmental improvements based in insight of registered environmental professionals.

  2. Proactively identify and take opportunities to use SocEnv insight.

  3. Influence policy makers, including local and national government and civil servants through evidence-based policy work and personal interaction.

  4. Work with the communications staff at SocEnv and in its Licensed Body partners to plan external communications around SocEnv’s insight work, including working with press teams to draft press releases and statements in rapid response to major Government announcements.

  5. Ensure that policy briefings, speeches, presentations and other materials to be used by the SocEnv staff and volunteers are produced to the highest standards.

  6. Proactively follow developments in environmental policy through official and informal networks, and analyse their impact.

  7. Disseminate briefings, updates, information and advice on policy issues to inform and assist colleagues.

  8. Work with stakeholder management to proactively identify opportunities to develop and lead collaborative work with other organisations to further SocEnv’s policy goals.

  9. Develop and maintain good working relationships with civil servants and other officials.

  10. Represent SocEnv at meetings with external organisations and stakeholders at all levels.

Personal Specification

  1. Knowledge of Government environmental and sustainability policies.

  2. A good understanding of policy-making processes.

  3. Detailed knowledge of creation of detailed insight from across a range of diverse organisations.

  4. Ability to present complex information at senior levels.

  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to use a variety of styles to reach diverse audiences.

  6. Skilled at building and developing partnerships with a wide range of people (internally and externally) at all levels.

  7. Excellent organisational, planning, facilitation, time management and project management skills; ability to work to frequently tight, externally fixed deadlines in accordance with government and Parliamentary fixed timetables.

  8. A proven ability to manage confidential issues and demonstrate tact and diplomacy.

  9. Ability to use advanced level IT skills including Excel, Word and Powerpoint.

  10. Ability to work as a team member to achieve shared goals.

  11. Excellent analytical skills.

  12. Demonstrable experience in negotiating and influencing.

  13. A confident decision maker.

Position Details

Employer: Society for the Environment

Salary (per annum pro rata): £32,000 to £38,000 per annum depending on experience
