|Project||Sustainable Procurement Officer|
|Employer||University College London|
University College London (UCL) is a public research university in London, England, and the oldest and largest constituent college of the University of London.
UCL's main campus is located in the Bloomsbury area of central London, with a number of institutes and teaching hospitals located elsewhere in central London.
The UCL Sustainability Team has been in place for 4 years and in that time the Institution has moved from 61st to 29th place in People and Planet’s Green League, won a Green Gown Award for Innovation and has grown to six members.
As a research intensive institution, UCL requires a lot of energy to run (currently costing £14 million/year) and purchases over £250 million worth of goods all of which have a significant carbon impact. We are seeking a dynamic individual to help implement our ambitious carbon reduction plan with a particular focus on sustainable procurement.
The Sustainable Procurement Officer role is a new fixed term role reporting to the Sustainability Manager (Energy and Carbon) reflecting the importance of improving the institution’s carbon performance. The role will work across UCL to drive a circular economy approach to the goods and services that UCL buys, thereby reducing carbon emissions, waste and the use of other natural resources, as well as support UCL’s wider carbon reduction programme. It is also envisaged that the role will help to drive engagement with companies providing goods and services to UCL around sustainability.
Benefits of this opportunity
The role offers generous training and support and is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the circular economy, carbon management or behaviour change to deliver real improvement in environmental performance. You will be working in an inspiring team, and be liaising with departments across the University from Astrophysics to Genetics and Greek.
Future employment potential
Previous fixed-term roles taken forward through Change Agents UK have now been made permanent. Any potential for future employment however is dependent on the needs of the team at the time of the contract expiry and in the future. We would like the applicant to use their time at UCL to develop their experience and knowledge as much as possible to give them strong experience for their future career here or elsewhere. This role should enable the successful applicant to find employment in sustainability, the circular economy, energy management and a number of other areas.
