They are looking for someone with experience of working in the landscaping, horticultural or construction industries who has a passion for training and developing people who are not in education or employment.

The role demands an enthusiastic person who is able to pass on skills by training a wide range of volunteers, enabling them to gain qualifications, experience and improve their job prospects. The training takes place through the implementation of real community landscape improvement projects and the post holder will lead the volunteers through the on-site work as well as their qualifications.

Responsibilities

Outputs

The post holder will have the ability to engage with and train a range of volunteers aged 16-65. The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the practical landscaping work and the teaching and assessment of City & Guilds qualifications. There will also be the opportunity to help develop and deliver a wider range of community focussed environmental projects alongside the wider team.

Key Tasks

  1. Deliver a wide-ranging programme of practical, environmental volunteer activities, including food growing schemes, training projects, team building events, gardening support and general environmental improvements.

  2. Lead the training and supervision of trainees undertaking hard and soft landscaping improvement projects and assist with classroom based learning in respect of employability, health and safety and land based activity.

  3. Maintain positive relationships with trainees and keep groups motivated and productive. Provide pastoral care to trainees as needed.

  4. Maintain positive relationships with project partners, college, landowners, employers and colleagues.

  5. Work with the Employment & Community Supervisor to plan, cost and implement practical landscape projects, providing quotes to customers where necessary.

  6. Oversee trainees and volunteers on projects and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations for on-site work including the completion of risk assessments, projects plans as per Groundwork project procedures.

  7. Work with the Supervisor to ensure projects and assessments are appropriately planned, monitored and undertaken on time and to budget (including completion of C&G qualifications, risk assessments, work programmes etc.).

  8. Effectively manage a varied workload, ensuring all projects are well planned, remain within budget, outputs are achieved and milestones met, through efficient project management.

Other Responsibilities

  1. To promote Groundwork activities at a local and regional level; and provide an efficient and courteous service.

  2. To ensure compliance with the Trust’s policies, and with insurance and statutory requirements, particularly health and safety, the Children’s Act and equal opportunities.

  3. To undertake other administrative duties as required by the post.

  4. Provide support and assistance in respect of other Groundwork projects.

  5. To undertake any task that may be requested from time to time by the Executive Director or Operations Director or Operations Manager, as may be consistent with the nature and scope of this post.

  6. To attend team meetings and supervision with line manager.

  7. To undertake training and development as agreed with line manager.

  8. To be a positive force within the staff team taking personal responsibility for ensuring good morale and an positive work relations

Personal Specification

Essential

  1. Demonstrable experience in a wide range of hard and soft landscaping work, including knowledge in timber construction, paving, fencing and planting.

  2. Previous experience of working with people in a training capacity.

  3. Experience of delivering community / environmental projects.

  4. An effective time management skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  5. An effective communication and social skills - explaining, listening and patience.

  6. Experience in the process of Health and Safety Assessment for practical tasks.

  7. The ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

  8. A competent user of power tools and machinery.

  9. A valid driving licence with access to a car that you are willing to insure for business purposes.

  10. Willingness to undertake a DBS check.

Desirable

  1. A qualification or equivalent training in assessment, teaching and/or horticulture/landscaping.

  2. Previous experience of budget management and quoting to customers.

  3. An understanding and interest in current community and environmental issues.

  4. An Understanding of issues facing unemployed adults and young people.

  5. Knowledge or experience in supervising and managing young and adult volunteers.

  6. The ability to lead on classroom based studies.

  7. Knowledge or experience of dealing with difficult behaviours.

  8. Up to date Emergency First Aid Training.

Salary (per annum pro rata): £22,199 - £25,473 plus attractive benefits
