Overview

LSE is recruiting a Sustainable Waste and Procurement Officer, who will manage LSE’s waste services and drive sustainable procurement.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to create a positive impact in a stimulating organisation, which has a longstanding commitment to sustainability.

 

Located in the heart of central London, LSE is one of the world’s leading universities.  This role is based in the Estates Division, which manages LSE’s central London campus and halls of residence.  Working as a member of the Sustainability Team, the post holder will manage LSE’s waste, achieving excellent operational delivery whilst improving environmental performance, as well as leading sustainable procurement initiatives, and working on a range of other initiatives to deliver LSE’s Environmental Sustainability Policy.

 

Candidates should have experience of delivering waste management services, experience of working in an environmental role, and experience or knowledge of sustainable procurement practices.  Understanding of the higher education sector is desirable.

Function

Working as a member of the LSE Sustainability Team this post will support the Head of Sustainability in delivering the School’s Sustainability Policy. The role will focus on implementation of the School’s Waste Strategy (including management of waste contracts and operations), improving sustainable procurement processes, and other ad hoc sustainability projects which arise.

 

 

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of delivering operational waste, facilities management or sustainability programmes within an organisation.

  • Good understanding of health and safety, particularly applied to waste management.

  • Experience of delivering a programme to improve environmental sustainability or facilities services.

  • Experience of working closely with contractors to ensure good operational and environmental outcomes, particularly waste / facilities.

  • Ability to use initiative to creatively develop solutions to problems, and suggest new approaches for continuous improvement.

  • Ability to organise own workload to deliver objectives within agreed timeframes, budgets and standards.

  • Ability to monitor and report on performance data projects against agreed timescales and deliverables

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Ability to collate and analyse quantitative and qualitative data to produce management information.

  • Experience of working as a member of a team and contributing actively and effectively to it

  • Willingness to work flexibly and to contribute to the overall team effort.

  • A self-starter with a proactive attitude.

  • Ability to collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders including contractors, students and staff, to ensure the waste contracts deliver good service and value for money.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience or understanding of sustainability issues and how they can be addressed within organisations, particularly sustainable waste and procurement practices.

  • Qualification in an environmentally-related or other relevant discipline, or membership of relevant professional body.

  • Experience in responding to customer enquiries and service requests.

  • Ability to develop the waste strategy to maintain excellent operational and environmental outcomes.

  • Experience of delivering training / awareness programmes.

  • Ability to report on performance to management.
