Opportunity Peterborough is the economic development company of the city. In partnership with Peterborough City Council, Opportunity Peterborough delivers the Future Peterborough programme which aims to create a smarter, more sustainable city for its citizens and businesses.
The specific opportunity focused on progressing Peterborough’s Circular Economy Programme, which aspires to create a truly circular city by 2050. In practical terms, this means making the most of the resources available locally to ensure that we are living within the resources of one planet.
This involved a diverse range of tasks, from engaging with local stakeholders via workshops to presenting at international conferences.
The support provided by Change Agents UK at the start of the placement was invaluable in providing advice and guidance for my professional development, early on in my career.
Working as the city’s Circular Economy Project Officer, key responsibilities have included: managing and marketing our online B2B resource sharing platform; local stakeholder engagement to establish pilot projects; development of a maturity model to measure business’s CE progress; coordinating and writing an EU funding proposal; and promoting the initiative at national and international events.
The placement has been incredibly diverse and challenging, resulting in a growth in confidence and the development of a number of different skills, including improved networking, presenting, bid writing/coordinating and persuasion skills.
Key achievements so far include, the effective coordination of a cross-European funding proposal, over 200 organisations signed up to Share Peterborough and presenting at 5 conferences. We have also achieved significant international media attention for the programme, including an article in Spanish national newspaper El Mundo and feature in an upcoming international documentary on circular cities.
Next steps of the project include, developing a Circular City Roadmap, a programme of business acceleration workshops and a series of pilot projects.
“Katie has very quickly become a key part of the Future Peterborough team. In particular, her commitment to and passion for developing Circular City approaches are proving invaluable and she is continuing to develop both her knowledge and her skills as a result.”
