Sustainability Project Officer, Sara at Queen Mary University of London

QMUL is a Russel Group university with over 20,000 students and 4,000 members of staff. Although the Sustainability team is small, it is an integral part of the Estates and Facilities department. Key tasks include managing and reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, running student and staff engagement campaigns, enhancing sustainable transport infrastructure and biodiversity on campus. 


The Sustainability Project Officer position is a hands-on role and leads on all aspects of sustainable transport, Fairtrade, biodiversity and sustainable catering. In addition, the position supports the management of events, engagement campaigns and energy management

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the Sustainability Projects Officer position have been to act as the lead on sustainable transport at the university which includes organising a number of events throughout the year and leading on cycle infrastructure capital projects. In addition, the role includes leading on the Fairtrade submission and events, bodiviersity projects, bid applications and award applications.

The Results                                                         

QMUL have now installed over 160 new cycle spaces and 3 bike pumps on each site. In addition, they are working towards their 34% carbon reduction target in line with the carbon reduction strategy.
