Meet Tolu, one of our recent Green Skills Bootcamp graduates.

Before enrolling in the Bootcamp, Tolu was employed full time as a Business Development Manager, working in corporate and commercial signage manufacturing. Though successful in her role, she wanted to make a more meaningful impact in the world. Tolu chose sustainability and was looking to grow her career in the green sector.

During the Green Skills Bootcamp

When Tolu was told about the Skills Bootcamp in Sustainability and Environmental Management it felt like a good fit for her. She liked that the Green Skills Bootcamp delivered a comprehensive mix of topics. Two that stood out the most for her were systems thinking and project management.

The systems thinking section helped shift how I view sustainability challenges. Instead of tackling issues in isolation, I learned to see the bigger picture—how different elements are connected, what the root causes might be, and how to plan for long-term impact. Tools like systems mapping and doughnut economics were completely new to me and super eye-opening.
Project management was another highlight. It wasn’t just about the technical side of managing tasks—it really emphasised responsible project management, which felt much more relevant for sustainability work. Learning to factor in social and environmental impacts, stakeholder engagement, and ethical decision-making gave me a more well-rounded approach to leading projects.

During the course we also make room for personal development. Tolu highlighted this as another great element. She particularly liked the modules on reflective practice, communication and climate anxiety. Tolu found these "refreshing and grounding".

What happened after the Skills Bootcamp in Sustainability and Environmental Management?

Like many of our learners Tolu took advantage of the IEMA and CIWM memberships, stating they "are a great way to keep learning and stay connected."

After completing the course Tolu felt more confident in applying for green jobs but also felt able to go for more senior roles. "The course helped me see myself not just as a job candidate, but as someone who can drive meaningful change in an organisation."

This confidence and her new skills enabled Tolu to approach her organisation and make a compelling case to move roles internally. She is now Sustainability Manager at  Pearce Signs Limited. Rather than a traditional job interview, her new skills helped her make a compelling case internally.

“The knowledge and skills I gained gave me the confidence to demonstrate how I could contribute strategically and take ownership of sustainability projects. It was a key factor in showing that I was ready to step into this new position.”

The course hasn't just enabled Tolu to move into a role but has already been instrumental in carrying out her duties. In talking to us she said "One clear example is during our ISO 14001 audit with a UKAS-accredited provider—the understanding of environmental management systems and responsible project management from the course helped me prepare effectively and contribute confidently throughout the process."

I would definitely recommend the course to anyone interested in sustainability or looking to move into a green career. It’s well-structured, practical, and empowering, whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow in your current role. The combination of recognised certifications, hands-on tools, and supportive learning made a real difference for me.
