Let’s dive into how you can start building a green career!.
First, let’s identify what a green career actually is. In simple terms, it’s any role that helps protect the environment, tackle climate change, or promote sustainability.
You might be thinking, “That sounds pretty broad.” And you’re right—it is. Green careers are incredibly diverse and far-reaching.
Some common green roles you may have already heard of include sustainability analysts, environmental managers, countryside rangers and ecologists. However, green careers can span into law, fashion, marketing and even urban design!
It can be difficult at first to narrow down the areas you might want to work in and what would be a good fit so start by considering your:

Qualifications
Skills
Interests/passions
Values
Preferred work environment
Lifestyle priorities
Personality fit
This can seem like a daunting task at first but start small. Jot down a few notes and begin mapping out your path.
Next, think about whether you might need to upskill or retrain. Take a look at job adverts and compare the essential requirements with the skills you already have. Transferable skills you already have do count! Just make sure you specify why your skill would translate into this new role or sector.
If you do need to upskill you’ll need to consider what free time you can set aside for training and what finances are available (remember not all training course are free). Some courses are available online which offer more flexibility and others offer evening/weekend sessions which can work around your existing role.
The next step is to actually start applying. Take the time to tailor your CV and applications—one strong, targeted application is far more effective than ten generic ones. If you’re not getting past the application stage, reflect on any gaps. Are there key requirements you’re missing that could be addressed through training?
Realistically, you need to meet most of the essential requirements of a role to progress to interview stage (not all if you have a strong application otherwise). So make sure you mention each of the essential criteria in the job application to give yourself the best possible chance of success.
